Sonko's remarks elicited mixed reactions as some leaders called for his arrest.

He made the sentiments at Ndeti's farm ranch in Kinanie, Mavoko Sub County.

The governor who was the Nairobi Senator then, said he had the mandate to discharge President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto's duties since they were both out of the country in official duties.

Sonko shocked the mourners including NASA leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Siaya Senator James Orengo who were all in attendance by publicly announcing that he was the third in command after Uhuru and Ruto.

He said he the mandate to discharge Uhuru and Ruto's duties in an acting capacity.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta is in Togo, his deputy William Ruto is in France. I' am number three in command politically and socially. I am now the acting President of the Republic of Kenya," Sonko said.

Sonko later faulted NASA leader Raila Odinga and other politicians who walked away while he was delivering his speech at the burial ceremony.

He maintained that he did nothing wrong following the controversial remarks.

“Upon receiving the presidential release, I acted in my capacity as the Presidential representative to read to the leaders, family members and residents in attendance the President’s speech. This seemed to rub the Opposition leaders, to whom I duly respect, the wrong way. A clear act of cowardice and disrespect to the Presidency as they walked out during my time,” Sonko said.
