Waititu was nicknamed ‘Baba Yao’ for his aggressiveness in tackling issues especially those touching on local mwananchi.Waititu, who was born to a humble family, ventured into politics in 2002 when he was elected to City Hall as a councillor for Njiru ward. He later served as a deputy mayor before being elected as Embakasi MP in 2008, following the death of then MP Melitus Mugabe Were.During his tenure as Embakasi MP, Waititu led fierce battles against land grabbing, sometimes finding himself on the wrong side of the law.Waititu endeared himself to Embakasi residents and Nairobians due to his hard stance against public land grabbing. He often visited areas where land grabbing was rife and even engaged in physical confrontations with the alleged grabbers.Waititu did not shy away from criticising land grabbers, who he claimed were prominent government officials. At one time in 2012, Waititu was captured on camera throwing stones at an alleged land grabber as he led demonstrations against the vice. On April 6, 2012, Waititu found himself in trouble after he led demonstrators in protesting the demolition of houses by alleged grabbers in Umoja estate.Waititu, who was then serving as Water Assistant Minister was arrested after his supporters and locals allegedly started hurling stones at the police.Waititu was bundled into a police vehicle and taken to the Milimani Law Courts where he was charged with incitement.Click here to watch the video.#historynow
