Moments after arriving at the Nyali police station, Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho addressed the press, explaining why he was at the station.

Reports indicated he was briefly detained, Monday.

He said he had arrived at the police station, to demand for the release of seven county inspectorate officers, who had been arrested, for blocking grabbing of a public land, which acts as a path to a public beach.

He said a regional police commander (Nelson Marwa - Coast), and his officers were trying to aide someone to grab the land, yet it is not clear, why exactly, were they interfering with a county government operation.

"I have never seen him go to Lamu, or Boni Forest when there are terrorist attacks to save the people. But he is quick to come and inspect a wall and order arrest of county inspectorate officers despite the county government giving them orders," said Joho.

He expressed disappointment that county governments can no longer enforce laws due to interference from the national government, with police supervising illegal constructions.

"For me, I have come here to demand the immediate release of the county enforcement officers. If not, then I should be told, why they are detained, and why they should not be taken to court," he added.
