On August 2, 2017, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua hit the headlines after storming KTN's Live recording with his supporters. The second term governor walked into an interview at the Mulu Mutisya Grounds after his political critic, Mutunga made what he termed as misleading remarks against him during an interview hosted by KTN’s Mashirima Kapombe.
According to the governor, the competitor had no guards to insult him in his backyard. Mutunga has claimed that Mutua was only using his position to get public attention. The remarks, however, did not go well with the governor, who was defending his seat during the campaigns period prior to the hotly contested elections.
”This is the only county in Kenya where we had a presidential function to officially unveil public toilets,” Mutunga said.
Mutua had also been invited for the said interview but he did not confirm whether he would be present for the event.
The governor supported the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto.
His stand made him walk a tightrope considering the influence of the National Super Alliance (NASA) in the region.
Mutua has hinted at contesting for the nation’s top seat in 2022 after he completes his second term in office.
