Most videos and images shared online allegedly from a clash between the police and University of Nairobi students are fake, it has now emerged. IPOA, which plays an oversight role in the conduct of police, has said that the videos are old ones, dealing a huge blow to NASA leaders who have been accusing anti-riot police of using excessive force to stop the university students from looting, disrupting traffic on busy roads at the Nairobi CBD and harassing people. Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said that he is sick and tired of the lies being peddled by NASA leaders and their sympathizers on the conduct of police. The CS said that he had been receiving calls on children being beaten in school, only to realise that it was in Zimbabwe. Dr Matiang’i revealed that before police were invited by the university administration to control the rioting students, some of the UoN students had stoned a motorcyclist, threatening to kill him. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said IPOA was investigating the incident, and that if any officer is found to have broken the law, he will be punished. The university administrators admitted that they called the reinforcement of police, after the students became uncontrollable. The university has since been closed indefinitely after reports surfaced that leaders in the NASA coalition, including MP Babu Owino, were planning to sponsor more demos at the institution. The NASA leaders are yet to respond following the revelation that their allegations of police brutality were acts of spreading sensitive propaganda.
