Vihiga County Assembly has been urged to draft a Bill that would enable allocation of funds towards construction of houses for poor families and needy elderly people.
Vihiga County Women Representative Mrs. Beatrice Adagala made the appeal at Jeblebuk village in Gisambai ward where she distributed house construction materials to two elderly women.
Adagala regretted what she described as the ballooning population of residents living under deplorable conditions in various parts of the densely populated County.
“It is regrettable to see a majority of our people from poor backgrounds lacking internationally recommended shelter in the 21st century,” observed Adagala.
The Women Rep encouraged the County Executive to work closely with the assembly in order to initiate the Bill, which she noted would greatly assist the needy people.
“Let us borrow a leaf from other counties, in particular, our immediate neighbor Kakamega County,” added Adagala in reference to county government-sponsored sheltering program for the vulnerable elderly persons that was rolled out in Kakamega County in 2016.
Phanice Kagonya and Margaret Shigan thanked the women leader after receiving the housing materials, among them iron sheets. The two are widows living under pitiable conditions.
“We are appealing to the county government and other well-wishers to come and address the plight of vulnerable members of society in our county,” urged Kagonya.
Her sentiments were supported by area Member of County Assembly, Mr. Eric Odei who promised to take up the challenge of drafting the suggested Bill.
