A man who villagers took to a mortuary thinking he is dead after being beaten senselessly has finally spoken out.
Willis Olilo, 24, said on the fateful day he was with his two other colleagues when villagers descended on them thinking they were thieves. He, howeverm confessed that indeed they used to terrorize residents of Luanda in Vihiga County and forcefully stole from them. Most of their operations, he said, were in funerals.
He said they would take anything they wanted from pedestrians and motorists in Luanda.
On the day they were cornered and beaten, thieves had robbed shops in Esamenya shopping centre and after hearing screams, he rushed with his colleagues to find out what was happening.
"We reached there and found three men armed with pangas. In no time, villagers turned on us after suspecting we were thieves," he told The Nairobian.
Over 500 people surrounded them and beat him and his friends senselessly although one of them escaped narrowly.
They were left for the dead before police arrived at the scene to pick their 'bodies' which were taken to the Mbale Hospital Mortuary.
After two days he woke up at 3am and found himself lying on top of a dead man. Olilo screamed attracting the attention of security guards and mortuary attendants.
A doctor was called to examine him before he was taken to a ward under tight security.
His family back home had started burial arrangements he said. He, after being discharged from hospital got saved and is not selling eggs and sausages in Luanda town to earn a living.
