Vihiga United boosted their chances of promotion to Kenya's top flight football, after downing Palos FC at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Wednesday.

In a match that was crucial to both teams in the lakeside town, it was Vihiga who came out on top, scoring a controversial second-half penalty to pick the three points.

The win lifted the boys to second place and put them in contention for a promotion.

The match started on a low key, with both teams trying to get the better of each other.

The first 45 minutes ended in a draw, but the visitors, who looked the better team throughout came back in the second half to score the much-needed goal.

Patrick Okullo scored the lone goal in the 67th minute after Charles Okwemba was fouled inside the box.

The result puts Vihiga in second place with 74 points, one behind leaders Ushuru FC, and on level with Wazito, who have an inferior goal difference.

The fight for promotion will go down to the last match, as the top teams fight for promotion.
