Busia residents have been stunned by a 'lake' said to be expanding at Munongo village. On Wednesday, people flocked the village in Matayos sub-county to see the ‘new lake' that has been formed in the area despite there being no rains.Allegedly, the phenomenon occurred after a stream formed the rare feature.According to the Star, it is now growing into a tourist attraction with curious residents trooping to the 'lake' situated at the Kenya-Uganda border.Once filled with papyrus reeds, residents say they woke up last week and found the expanded waterway which has been expanding since then.Fears abound that villagers might be displaced as the water level rises."The area had only a small stream full of papyrus. We woke up last week and found the lake. We fear it might displace us," Justo Khayoko, a resident, was quoted by the publication. Some Busia county officials visited the village and downplayed fears of the waterway expanding further.Agriculture Chief Officer Caroline Kwedho, Fisheries Director Timothy Odende and Patricia Okello from Public Service who visited the area said the county will engage hydrologists to ascertain to which extent the waterway risks the lives of those bordering it, according to the Star.A person familiar with the area says the lake lies on a swampy ground which could have sunk creating the illusion of a water body forming.
