The national government has set aside Sh1.2 billion to pay village elders who engage in fight against crime and dispute resolution.
Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said the elders were playing an important role in ensuring security in the rural areas.
"We have even written to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission and very soon, the elders will start getting allowances to boost their morale," he said at Kerugoya Catholic Church grounds in Kirinyaga County.
He added, "We shall give you a good package to enable you to discharge your duties without problems."
The chiefs, police officers and senior administrators who attended the Thursday meeting were given Sh1,000 each as allowance.
