Deputy President (DP) William Ruto has shown an insatiable appetite to make inroads in NASA leader Raila Odinga's Nyanza political turf. And if the recent political moves in the region are anything to go by, then the DP's 2022 presidential bid is on track.
Reports in the Standard over the weekend indicated that former ODM MPs; Agostino Neto and Silvance Osele last month publicly declared their support for Ruto saying that he is better placed to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Long considered the 'Future of Nyanza', Neto burst into the limelight in 2012 when he succeeded Orwa Ojode who died in a helicopter crash. And one year later, Osele became the youngest MP in the country when he shocked veterans to clinch the seat. However, after a fallout with ODM top leadership, they both lost their seats during the 2017 election.
Since the 2017 poll, the two have been blowing hot and cold on whether they are still in ODM. However, their recent activities suggest that they are trying to pursue their political careers away from ODM. And with the Ruto option on the cards, it's Raila who might be dealt a blow, especially as the 2022 power game beckons.
