Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has expressed concerns over a low number of students enrolling in Vocational Training Institutions in the county.
Mandago says despite his administration investing a lot of resources in building and equipping the institutions, most of them remain underutilized. The governor said they might be forced to close down some of the institutions if the low enrollment being witnessed persists."It's sad that the total enrolment in the 12 vocational centers is less than 1,000 students yet we pumped a lot of taxpayers money to construct them," said Mandago in Eldoret town, Wednesday."We are planning to close 6 centers since the enrolment is very poor and a waste of public resources," he added.Mandago, however, challenged students who got attained grade D+ and below in the last year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations to join the vocational training centers for them to be equipped with skills and knowledge that will help them earn a living."My government will subsidize the fees for more students to be admitted. Let us change the narrative that these institutions are meant for failures," he noted. To be the first to get updates on breaking and trending news in Kenya, send your Whatsapp number to 0740949990.
