International automobile manufacturer, Volvo Trucks, will construct a Sh2.5 billion trucks assembly plant in Mombasa with the first lorries expected to hit the local market in 2018.
The company’s local partner, Necst Motors according to the plan, will provide the capital for the establishment of an assembly line to be housed at the Associated Vehicle Assemblies (AVA) plant in Mombasa.
Necst has also committed to build 20 Volvo Trucks workshops across East Africa in the next five years.
“We believe strongly in the growth of this region, Kenya and the neighbouring countries, and that is why we think now is a better time to invest in this region,” Volvo Trucks’ president Claes Nilsson said on Thursday.
If the Mombasa plant is established, Kenya will become the third African country to host a Volvo Trucks assembly facility after South Africa and Morocco.
