[Photo/courtesy]President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday appealed to Western Kenya voters to support his re-election. He asked them to choose progress and development, which he said his government stood for, instead of non-issues and politics of personality attacks.The President made the call as he and his deputy William Ruto traversed Busia county by road from Port Victoria through Funyula, Bumala, Matayos and Nambale before ending their campaign tour at Amagoro.“Opposition leaders are experts in abusing other leaders but ask yourselves if you will be led by abuses, “ said the President. He predicted that the August 8 General Election would be easier for Jubilee Party to win than the 2013 election, and asked the people of Western Kenya region to join the winning team.Addressing a public rally at Port Victoria in Budalang’i constituency, Uhuru said they won the election in 2013 when Nasa presidential candidate Raila Odinga was prime minister, his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka was vice president and Musalia Mudavadi was a deputy prime minister.“I am sure we will win in the August 8 General Election the same way we did in the 2013 General Election despite our competitors having been in government,” he said.The President told the residents to choose their destiny by not accepting to be swayed by propaganda being spread by the Opposition.He listed Mumias Sugar, Nzoia Sugar, Rivatex and New KCC as some of the factories that his government had supported since it took power four years ago. The government, he added, was also planning to revive Kicomi and Mountex factories.“We want to reopen our textile factories and revive ginneries in order to support cotton farming,” the President said in Funyula, an area which was once the heart of cotton farming in the region.He said that before Jubilee took power in 2013, only 14,000 people in Budalang’i constituency had been connected to electricity but the number had risen to 50,000 in the past four years.Uhuru also pointed out that his administration had initiated the construction of the Sh5.1 billion Sigiri bridge after nine people died in a boat while crossing River Nzoia. The bridge will be commissioned for use at the end of this month, he said.The President said the government was committed to improving road infrastructure in the area. Speaking at Port Victoria rally, Labour Party leader Ababu Namwamba thanked the President for delivering on his promises.“You are trustworthy, you listen and you keep your promises,” he said. He added: “You are genuine, you are an understanding leader, you are a good listener and a performer.”
