The ongoing voter registration exercise has been characterised by a low turnout in Mombasa County since the process started on February 15.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has expressed concern that it might not meet its target due to the low voter registration turnout in Mombasa.

IEBC registry officer in charge of South and West Coast Gogo Musa said despite calls and campaigns by political leaders asking people to register in large numbers, very few have gone for voter listing.

“The number of people who have turned up to be registered as voters since the exercise kickoff is worrying.”

Mr Musa while speaking during a meeting to sensitize residents on the exercise said Mvita Constituency has recorded the lowest turnout with only 966 people being registered.

He added that they have only managed to register 8,000 out of an estimated 118,000 probable voters in the county by Wednesday.

“In Mvita Constituency, our target was to register 23,955 people in the first phase but so far we have only managed to register 966 people.”

“The number of those who have so far registered is worrying. People should understand that its their right to register and vote,” said Mr Musa.

The registry officer urged the residents to turn up in the remaining days and be registered as voters.
