Lamu West aspirant Rishad Amana has called upon Coast residents not to back the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto during the forthcoming general election. In an interview with The Star, Amana said the Jubilee government has done little to change the lives of Coast residents, adding that the State is fighting opposition leaders with the aim of killing the economy of the region. The aspirant also said voting for Jubilee amounts to betrayal.“Coast people must be vigilant. It will be a big betrayal for Coast people to vote for Jubilee. From Diani to Lunga Lunga, what economy are we thriving on?” asked Amana, as quoted by the daily. Amana, who has declared interest in the Lamu West Parliamentary seat, cited the push to set up a dry port in Naivasha and the ban on night fishing as some of the schemes the government is allegedly using to kill the region’s economy.State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu, however, downplayed claims by leaders from both the opposition and Jubilee that the Naivasha dry port will kill the region’s economy. Jubilee Mombasa gubernatorial aspirant Suleiman Shahbal and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho have both opposed the move to establish a dry port in Naivasha.
