Kisumu Central Constituency has disbursed Uwezo Funds amounting to Sh15 million to women, youth and people living with disability groups.
The constituency Youth and Gender Officer Rosemary Akhasaya said already the first groups that had benefited from the Fund have started repayment.
“Already we have in the account Sh3.6 million which have been repaid. We will again start the second phase of the revolving fund so that each and every group benefits from the scheme,” she said.
Ms Akhasaya said the Fund is revolving and will not be added from the central government.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday during the issuance of the last batch of cheques worth Sh2 million, the officer said the fund will collapse in the constituency if the groups fail to repay.
“There will be no money coming from Uwezo in Nairobi again. If the people of Kisumu Central fail to repay, then we will fold Uwezo in the area and it will be dead,” she said.
Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura who was present urged the beneficiaries to make an attempt to repay the loan.
Mr MObura said the loan should not be viewed as political money based on the idea that it was hived off from a re-run budget.
“I want to appeal to my people to repay this loan. This is a government scheme that should be with us as long as we repay,” he said.
He said if it is managed properly, the fund will be able to uplift the lives of locals.
