Kiambu County senator Kimani wa Matangi has launched a soccer tournament to help tap and nurture talent among the youth in the county. Speaking during the launch at Nyamakima Primary School on Friday, Wamatangi said the tournament will also help promote and enhance a peaceful coexistence between the locals. “The purpose of this tournament I am launching is to help bring out the best from our youth. We have had many talents rotting in reserves but I am sure that after this and other tournaments to come, we will see many of our youths play in our national teams,” he said. He asked youths across the county to form strong teams that will compete in the six-week tournament. He said Kenya Football Federation should not interfere with it. This is after unconfirmed reports indicated that the tournament may be stopped since the organisers have not followed procedures set by the Kenya Football Federation. During the launch, Mataara Football Club (FC) thrashed Nyamakima FC 2:1 in a balanced affair a result which saw both teams walk away with uniforms and two balls each. Mariaini women team was awarded two balls in readiness for the tournament. Winners of the tournament in each category will take home trophies and Sh50,000, while first runners up will be awarded Sh30,000 and second runners up Sh20,000.
