Kenya’s iron lady Martha Karua has pulled a hat trick and the likely most surprised is Kirinyaga County governor aspirant Anne Waiguru.
In a new twist like Donald Trump winning the American presidency, Karua has moved from working with the opposition to supporting Uhur Kenyatta for the presidency.
What is in the offing?
It is highly likely that the Narc Kenya leader will be given a senior government position or that she will have major support to vie in Kirinyaga.
If she is to get a position in government, it is safe to assume that Waiguru, who has been tainted by the NYS corruption scandal, can rest easy and battle it out with the incumbent Joseph Ndathi.
However, if this is not the case, then we can only expect that things will continue heading south for Waiguru whose fall from grace has been attributed to powerful cartels in government.
Karua is a no-nonsense woman and when it comes to speaking her mind, she suffers no fools.
In 1997, she walked out on former President Daniel Arap Moi when he visited Gichugu Constituency which she was representing then.
She cited disrespect for women after she was apparently denied a chance to address the audience.
Described as the ‘only man’ in Kibaki’s government while the men were likened to flower girls by outspoken Senator Kithure Kindiki, Karua does not mince her words when it comes to defending her opinion.
Last weekend, she issued a strong response to those advising her to merge her party with Jubilee as a strategy for capturing the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat saying her party was duly registered and was fully capable of fielding its own candidates.
Karua added that it was not her concern who won the Jubilee party nominations since she was capable of clinching the ticket on a Narc Kenya ticket.
She said, “Opposition can never be a praise choir for the government. The tradition since the return of multi-party politics is that the opposition works together. In 1992, you found Mr Kenneth Matiba, Mr Oginga Odinga and Mr Mwai Kibaki holding a press conference to say Mr Moi had rigged the poll,” she pointed out.
She declined to give a name for her choice of a presidential candidate.
Karua, however, clarified that Narc Kenya’s branches would announce whom they will support for the presidency as they deem fit.
She says she is still gunning for the governor seat.
