Former Devolution minister Anne Waiguru is rearing to battle it out with Kirinyaga Governor Joseph Ndathi after she received the blessings of Kikuyu elders to run for the county governorship seat in the 2017 polls.
Waiguru received the blessings of the Kikuyu Council of Elders who were led by their patron, Rev Benson Warui at a ceremony held in Kutus town on Friday.
Warui, 89, said the elders were happy with the work she did in Kibera, Nairobi as the Devolution CS more so on the construction of modern sanitation facilities.
"Our daughter was able to do the unimaginable when she worked day and night to bring to an end the shame of the residents of the densely populated slum, who used the flying toilets due to lack of the sanitation facilities," he said.
"I have been honoured by the elders to be the one who performs all the blessing ceremonies for those who wish to seek elective positions in this county," said as quoted by the Standard.
The former Cabinet secretary, according to the Standard, was dressed in Kikuyu traditional attire and ornaments won by leaders. Oil was also poured on her head while the prayers were held in the local dialect.
Waiguru who was given a rod for her turbulent journey said she wouldn’t have started her campaigns without the elders' blessings.
"I now feel highly elated having received the blessings from my fathers and guardians to wade through this murky world of politics," Waiguru said.
She said although she understands most of the problems area residents face, they were however not unique from other parts of the country.
"Kenyan problems revolve around health, education, agriculture, and land. Since I'm one of the citizens and brought up under such problems, I honestly believe I'm ready to tackle them head-on for the good of our people," said Waiguru.
Former Gichugu MP Bernard Kathanga was among the elders who attended the event.
