[Photo: the-star.co.ke]Narc Kenya Party Leader and Kirinyaga gubernatorial candidate Martha Karua has absolved herself over the British American Tobacco (BAT) scandal. She is alleged to have received Sh7.6 million bribe from BAT while campaigning for president in 2013 to stop a rival company from giving Kenya the technology to fight tobacco smuggling.Karua has said that she was cleared of any wrongdoing and the 'allegations' have only been revived by her gubernatorial race rival, former Devolution CS Anne Waiguru as part of a smear campaign meant to discredit her candidature."After those allegations were made against me, I called a press conference and asked the Kenyan law enforcers to investigate and prosecute me if there was any wrongdoing. No file has ever been opened and I was an opposition figure so, nobody was shielding me. It was just a baseless allegation," said Karua on Wednesday.Speaking in Kirinyaga during a county gubernatorial debate organised by NTV and which Waiguru didn't attend, Karua said that Waiguru has been 'desperately fishing' around to find something to implicate her with in the 20-years she has been in public service to no avail."You want to compare me with a person who spent her days in public office in and out of police stations of parliamentary committees. In my 20 years of service, not a single cent has been lost under my watch. And it is not that people don't try, but I keep watch that by the time you start scheming you are already in police cells," she added. The 59-year-old 'Iron Lady' of Kenyan politics portrayed Waiguru as a filthy corrupt state officer who spent her short stint at the Devolution and National Planning ministry 'supervising serial looting of public funds and systematic corruption'.
