Waiguru resigned last year November from the devolution docket following immense pressure from Kenyans and political leaders over loss of Sh791 million at the National Youth Service (NYS), which lied under her ministry.

Waiguru says she opted out of the Nairobi Governor race because of lack of a solid support base of the people.

She says it was wise for her to start her political career in Kirinyaga where she hails from.

“I thought I would run for Nairobi, then I was advised to first build a support base at home, that you can rely on. For someone entering politics you can rely on that. I think I would contribute best if I served the people of Kirinyaga.”

“It wasn’t about being scared, I felt I didn’t have a good support base in Nairobi yet. Also, I don’t think I could afford the campaigns in Nairobi,” Waiguru said on NTV, Tuesday.

The Nairobi gubernatorial seat has attracted interest from several leaders, including Water CS Eugene Wamalwa, Senator Mike Sonko, MP Dennis Waweru and Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

The seat is currently occupied by ODM’s Evans Kidero.

On the NYS scam, Waiguru reiterated that there were certain individuals who were after her downfall when she was a CS.
