Kiambu County Governor Ferdinand Waititu has reiterated that his administration will not back down on its decision to sack the nurses on strike.

Speaking during his first address to the County Assembly, Waititu said the devolved unit will carry on with its plan to hire new staff.

"The County Service Board has already made public advertisements for over 200 vacancies meant to replace the striking nurses," he said.

The county boss termed the strike illegal and accused the nurses of being rigid during negotiations to resolve the pay row.

"Our people cannot continue to suffer due to the stubbornness and unreasonable demands by the nurses," Waititu added.

More than 25,000 nurses across the country have been on strike for the past 110 days in a demand for implementation of a collective bargaining agreement signed with the Council of Governors (CoG) in March.

The nurses want higher pay and better working conditions.
