A group of key Jubilee leaders from Central Kenya has vowed to support Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa as the coalition's gubernatorial candidate for Nairobi in 2017.
They cited Wamalwa's loyalty and courage in Jubilee government as the reasons behind their move to support him.
The leaders who endorsed Wamalwa include MPs Kanini Kega, Jude Njomo, Mpuru Aburi and Ferdinand Waititu.
They MPs spoke on Sunday at a church service where they said they were ready and prepared to throw their weight behind Wamalwa.
“We cannot let the governor’s seat go to the opposition again. We lost once but now we are well organised and we know who we want for Nairobi governor and it is Eugene Wamalwa,” Kanini Kega said.
“We have heard that Wamalwa wants the Nairobi seat and we will make sure that the many residents of Kiambu who vote in Nairobi cast their votes for him," said Waititu.
“Wamalwa is a friend of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto; we know that if he takes the mantle in Nairobi, we are going to feel the benefits in Kiambu,” Waititu said.
The entry of Wamalwa in the race for Nairobi gubernatorial seat adds to an already crowded list of aspirants such as Senator Mike Sonko, Bishop Magret Wanjiru, Dagoreti MP Dennis Waweru, Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja and Rails's bitter critic Miguna Miguna. All these candidates are preparing to unseat incumbent Governor Evans Kidero.
