Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has come out to clear the air saying that he is not fighting genuine bar traders but illegal brews.
Waititu, speaking in Thika Town on Wednesday during the election of Thika sub-county Alcoholic Drinks Control Committee members, said that he is willing to 'protect' genuine bar traders dealing with legalized brews.
"I want us to have a boundary where we are able to differentiate between the good and bad alcohol. The traders dealing with good alcohol, as the county government, it will be our responsibility to give them a conducive working environment," said Waititu.
He noted that residents have been consuming counterfeits believing that they were drinking genuine alcohol.
"This is what we are totally against because those substandard drinks are the ones destroying our children," he added.
The governor also warned that no bar shall be allowed to operate near residential areas or schools.
This is as he lamented the increased consumption of bhang in Thika town especially at Majengo estate where he said it has reduced youths into zombies.
Waititu on Thursday (today) will oversee similar elections in Githunguri, Kabete and finish at Kikuyu, marking the end of a four day exercise that kicked-off on Monday.
