Kiambu County government won't pay some of the debts that accrued during the tenure of former Governor William Kabogo.
According to the incumbent county boss Ferdinand Waititu, the last administration colluded with some suppliers and contractors to steal money from county coffers.
"I have been under intense pressure from some people who transacted business with the last regime to pay them their dues but I will not until I verify what they are demanding are genuine debts," he said.
Addressing journalists in his Kiambu Town office on Monday, Waititu said the current debt stands at Sh1 billion which his government is struggling to pay.
"Our development budget is Sh700million; that means if we pay all accumulated dues, we will have nothing left to develop Kiambu. That is not what we were elected to do," the vocal governor said.
Echoing the same sentiments, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wa has urged Waititu not to pay for the projects that did not benefit the locals.
"All the works done by contractors and goods and services supplied must have had value for money. The county must first conduct thorough audit before releasing a single sent to creditors," Ichung'wa said after paying Waititu a courtesy visit.
