Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has pledged to address the plight of firefighters in the county.

Waititu noted that lack of better terms of service and skills were a major setback in disaster preparedness.

"My administration will improve firefighters' salaries and allowances and provide them with insurance cover," he said.

"I will also increase the number of firefighters to improve their efficiency in responding to emergencies," Waititu added.

Kiambu has seven sub-county fire offices, 10 fire engines and 90 firefighters.

The Governor was speaking during a one-week event sponsored by Africa Fire Mission at Thika Stadium on Wednesday.

Speaking at the same event, Kenya National Fire Brigade Association Secretary General Francis Omollo lamented that most counties lack the capacity to respond effectively to fire outbreaks.

"We have organised this event to equip firefighters in all the 47 counties with enhanced fire management and disaster preparedness skills," Omollo said.
