Teachers working in Wajir County on Friday protested the killing of three teachers in a dawn attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.
The teachers led by area Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (Kuppet) assistant secretary Jero Erick demanded that security is provided to the teachers.
Mr. Erick said they are willing to teach but in areas where their security is guaranteed.
“Teachers are living in fear due to increased terror attacks by Al-Shabaab militants. The education ministry and local leaders need to put up measures to ensure teachers’ security,” said Mr. Erick.
Mr. Shadrack Muli a teacher in the county urged the government to address their concerns to ensure learning continues in the county.
Mr. Muli said failure by the government to improve security for the teachers and learners, they will stage a protest and paralyze learning in the county.
“Teachers working in this region are not safe. The teachers are suffering and we want the government to intervene and ensure the working environment for teachers is safe,” said Mr. Muli.
The three non-local teachers were on Friday killed at Qarsa Primary School in Wajir following a dawn attack by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.
The three teachers were identified as Seth Oluoch Odada, Kevin Shari and Ms. Caroline, the wife of Seth who were killed in the school’s compound.
