Police have short dead the leader of the dreaded Wakali Kwanza gang which operates in Mombasa.
The gang leader was shot dead after a foiled robbery targeting traders in Kisauni sub county. Wakali Kwanza is a gang that terrorizes residents and most of its members use knives while stealing.
The deceased only identified as Jilo was shot dead by police officers on patrol as he tried to attack them at around 5:30am on Tuesday in Swahili area.
Kisauni police chief Sangura Musee confirmed the incident saying the police officers succeeded killing Jilo after residents alerted the law enforcers that a gang armed with machetes had been spotted robbing traders in Kongowea market.
"The officers were alerted and confronted the gang of three," Musee told Radio Jambo.
"They were ordered to surrender but one of them attempted to attack the officers with a machete. He was shot and disarmed."
He, however, said his accomplices managed to escape unhurt. He said Jilo succumbed to bullet injuries while being taken to the Coast Provincial General Hospital for treatment.
Wakali Kwanza is a gang that operates in Mombasa town and is known for being ruthless while robbing traders and pedestrians at the Coastal town.
