A man claimed to be part of the Wakali Kwanza gang that has been terrorising residents of Mombasa has been shot dead.

The youth whose identity is yet to be established by police was shot at close range in Likoni as he tried to attack police officers on patrol on Thursday morning.

Likoni police chief Benjamin Rotich who confirm the gunning down of the man said six other youth who were in his company managed to escape but added that police are in their pursuit.

"We received reports that a group of youth was robbing traders and pedestrians off valuable and we swung into action quickly," Rotich said.

"The one who was shot tried to attack our officers prompting them to open fire as others ran away. Those who know him say he is part of the Wakali Kwanza group but we are yet to establish his real name because he had no identification document," he added.

The body of the gang member killed in Dudus area was taken to the Coast Provincial General Hospital Mortuary.

His killing comes two days after one of the leaders of the gang only identified as Jilo was shot dead in Kisauni, an incident that was confirmed by area police boss Sungura Msee.

Wakali Kwanza is a gang that operates in Mombasa town and is known for being ruthless while robbing traders and pedestrians in the Coastal city.
