A suspected criminal gang member was on Wednesday killed by an angry mob in Mombasa.
The suspect was beaten to death after allegedly trying to attack members of the public in Old Town.
Confirming the incident, area chief Ahmed Abdurhaman said the suspect was in the company of six other youth, who were armed with machetes and other crude weapons.
Cheif Abdurhaman said the suspect has been on the police wanted list for a long time.
“The suspect belonged to the Wakali Kwanza group and he is from Sargoi here in Old Town. The group were on a mission to rob and attack the locals,” said the chief, as quoted by Baraka FM.
According to a witness who spoke on condition of anonymity, the six armed suspects tried to rob locals before they were over powered by area residents.
“His fellow gang members managed to escape leaving him cornered and he was descended upon by the public who killed him on the spot,” said the witness.
The body was taken to Coast General Hospital morgue.
