Renovations being made at Nakuru town’s Wakulima market will enable the absorption of all traders and as a result cut out middlemen who hinder business at the market, a Nakuru MCA has said.

Speaking during a visit to the market, Biashara ward representative Moses Kuria said that the market will accommodate all traders, including those selling foodstuffs outside the designated areas.

Stella Wambugu, a watermelon vendor at the largest market in Nakuru town, said traders have been getting fewer customers due to sellers operating from outside the market. This, she said, hindered customers from getting inside the market.

“Customers who are in a hurry tend to buy from outside, leading to exploitation by the middlemen,” she said.

“If all of us can operate from inside, then buyers can have a choice of where to buy from,” Wambugu added.

The market’s dumpsite has been rehabilitated and stalls constructed. The county officials will now have to collect garbage thrice a day from the market.

“The wheelbarrows you see outside the market will be things of the past. They have been creating a commotion and congestion along the Wakulima market street,” the MCA assured.

Those selling from outside have been assured of space inside the market but after paying the trading fee.
