Water Cabinet Secretary, Eugene Wamalwa on Wednesday hosted legislators and water sector stakeholders from North Eastern at his Nairobi office in a bid to address the frequent water crisis in the region.
Led by the chair of North Eastern Parliamentary group and the Garissa Township legislator Aden Duale, the leaders received a brief from the CS and his technical team on the status of water, sewerage and irrigation development projects funded by the national government in Garissa County and other adjacent areas.
Duale revealed the two sides discussed on strategies to improve Garissa water supply, the progress of the Garissa sewerage project and Mandera, Wajir water supply systems among other initiatives in the various constituencies. He further noted that the region largely inhabited by pastoral communities travel long distances in search of water for their animals hence an urgent need for joint efforts by both county and national governments to address perennial shortages once and for all.
The Wednesday meeting follows President Uhuru Kenyatta's recent visit to the area which saw him issue directives to various Ministries in addressing the region’s demands as pointed out by local elected leaders during the three-day tour.
