Kiambu senator Kimani Wamatangi has rubbished a proposal by a section of MPs to allegedly strip senate of its oversight role powers.

The senator says that the proposal by some MPs is ill advised and a threat to devolution.

According to Wamatangi, the constitution mandates the senate to oversight governors.

He states that the senate has played its oversight role effectively in the last four years of devolution.

The senator notes that stripping senate of oversight powers will undermine devolution.

“The proposal by some MPs to strip senate of its oversight role powers is ill-advised and meant to frustrate devolution,” he said.

Wamatangi said that the senate has been on the forefront in championing for devolution.

According to media reports, a section of MPs have allegedly hatched a plan to strip the senate of its oversight powers.

The MPs according to media reports want a National Assembly Committee on devolution established to oversight county government activities.

The alleged plan by MPs is likely to spark fresh wars between the Senate and the National Assembly.

The senate has been under attack with a section of county governors accusing it of allegedly using its powers to intimidate and frustrate their (governors) work.

Last week the Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee recommended investigation and prosecution of eight governors over alleged misuse of public funds in their respective counties.

The eight governors have since rubbished the senate report accusing the committee of political witch-hunt ahead of the August 8 polls.
