Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi has backed Governor Ferdinand Waititu's crackdown on illicit brews and second generation alcoholic drinks.

The senator argues that illicit brews and second generation alcoholic drinks have destroyed lives and anyone engaging in their making and selling should be dealt with mercilessly.

Speaking to journalists in Kiambu Town on Thursday , Wamatangi asked Governor Waititu not to relent in the crackdown on the brews.

Wamatangi said that illicit brewing is to blame for high poverty levels in Kiambu and other parts of the country.

“Many of our young people’s lives have been destroyed by illicit brews and alcoholic drinks,” he said.

The senator asked Kiambu elected leaders and residents to rally behind Waititu as he leads the fight on the outlawed liquor.

He appealed to the county assembly to pass more legislations that will intensify the fight against illicit alcohol.

Wamatangi said that unless illicit brews are eliminated, the county will remain poor with high unempeloyment rate.

Senator Wamatangi urged the county government to,do a thorough audit of individuals and companies selling alcoholic drinks.

He said that some unscrupulous businessmen have infiltrated the market and are now selling outlawed alcohol.

He warnered politicians against politicizing the crackdown saying that the effects of illicit brews do not know politics and that anyone involving in it must be arrested and arraigned in court.
