Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni wa Muchomba's controversial statement regarding polygamy continues to elicit mixed reactions.
On Sunday, her Nyandarua counterpart Faith Wairimu Gitau denounced the appeal saying that it is not even advisable for rich Kikuyu men to marry more wives.
She questioned the ability of a man in a polygamous family setting of equally loving all his wives, as well as all the children.
"I as Faith Wairimu Gitau, denounce that position that men marry several wives. We would also like to be loved and there is no way a man can love four women the same way. It could even be hard for such a person to love all those children and take care of them," Gitau said.
She spoke during a church dedication function at ACK Good Shepherd in Ol Kalau.
The MP said Muchomba’s stand was her own and not binding to the entire community and further urged men to stick to one wife as the Bible 'directs'.
"We cannot leave contrary to God’s wish and follow other religions that allow marriage of up to four wives. Our Constitution is the Bible and we will not go against it," Gitau added.
Wa Muchomba had advocated for able Kikuyu men to be allowed to be polygamous so as to increase birth rates in the Mt Kenya region.
