Hospital Ward MCA Mwangi Wamwangi has denied accusations by a section of Jamhuri, Ofafa and Starehe residents that he has ignored and left them at a time they need him most.
Wamwangi has been accused of 'keeping silent' when the county government raised rent from Sh750 to Sh1,000 for tenants residing in county government houses in Jamhuri, Ofafa and Starehe estates.
Most of the three estates tenants in the county houses are also facing inevitable evictions as the Kiambu County government seek to demolish and build new modern structures that can accommodate more people.
However, speaking on Monday at Thika Community Hall during a meeting with JAMOFASTAR Welfare Association members and officials, Wamwangi instead said that he was the one who fought tirelessly to see the rent set at Sh1,000 seeing that the county government wanted to raise it to Sh2,000.
"My plea at the county assembly to have JAMOFASTAR tenants continue paying Sh750 was rejected as it was argued that their counterparts in Ruiru sub-county were paying Sh1,000 and, therefore, the rent had to be raised to ensure equality. They wanted it to go up to Sh2,000 which I objected," Wamwangi said.
On the evictions, Wamwangi said that they are still trying to work out a plan that will ensure that the tenants are not evicted but are allowed time to look for alternative accommodation.
