Nominated senator Martha Wangari has lauded the ongoing fight against illicit brews in Nakuru saying it will help save many young people.
Addressing bodaboda operators at Gilgil Town on Monday, the senator said the crackdown will stem out illicit brewers whom she accused of turning the society into a drinking den.
The senator said that illegal brewing had become rooted especially in villages and that its fight will help in the realisation of development.
She urged local chiefs and the police to continue the crackdown and seize all illegal brews and drinks.
“We are in support of the ongoing fight against the illicit brews. I will give full support to the people leading the fight,” she said.
The senator said that many families have been broken as a result of illicit brews. She, however, urged the government to help drug addicts get treatment.
The senator also called for a review of liquor laws saying that rogue manufacturers are taking advantage of lenient laws to engage in dubious business.
At the same time, she asked women to stand firm and fight against attempts by some politicians to undermine their rights and privileges.
She cited failure by the government to implement the one-third gender rule saying that it is a clear indicator that some people are not ready to promote women leadership.
The senator said that the constitution has empowered women and that they will fight any attempts meant to undermine them.
Wangari asked women across the country to be ready to fight for their rights.
