With Kenyans now living in fear amid reports of 'killer sugar', Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga has sent radical advice to President Uhuru Kenyatta that could save lives if implemented.
The last few weeks have seen the war on contraband sugar that is said to contain mercury and other heavy metals intensified by various state agencies with several tonnes nabbed at various locations across the country.
Amid all this, Wanga, an ODM legislator believes that the war on the 'killer sugar' can be won if the government completely bans the importation of the commodity and revive local industries.
"Let's bite the bullet and ban the importation of sugar completely; revive our factories and give our people an economic lifeline. Any shortfall can be canceled by reduction in intake," tweeted the vocal lawmaker.
The MP's statement comes at a time various government officials have been issuing contradicting statements on reports that Kenyans have been consuming mercury with Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed denying the claims. However, his statement was dismissed by Directorate of Criminals Investigations boss George Kinoti.
Can Gladys Wanga's advice on the radical reforms to the sugar sector save the situation?
