Nyandarua's Hanna Wanjiru was in stellar form in the opening day of the Safaricom National Deaf Athletics Championships at Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret town after scooping wins in both 5000m and 1500m women's race.

Wanjiru, 21, clocked 20.25.5 to win the 5000m race ahead of Roselyda Okumu from Kakamega who finished second with 20.36.9 and Juster Kwamesa from Kisii who crossed the line aftr 20.57.4 to finish third.

In the 1500m race, Wanjiru once again outclassed her competitors to finish first on the time of 5.12.7 with Anna Nasiyo (5.25.6) and Timina Barasa (5.26.6) finishing second and third respectively.

The first two in each of the races attained the “B” completion entry standards to book a place in the team that will represent the country in the 23rd Deaflympics championships slated to be held in Samsun, Turkey from July 18 to July 30, 2017.

Safaricom National Deaf Athletics Championships are being used to select team Kenya that will take part in the July Deaflympics come to a close on Wednesday at the Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret town.
