The 2007-2008 political tension remains the worst in post-independence Kenya.

After the disputed election where Raila Odinga was running against Mwai Kibaki, violence broke out in the country with the worst hit being the Rift Valley.

The beneficiary of the violence was Raila who became Prime Minister after a negotiated deal where he had to share power with Kibaki.

This path was allegedly designed by the now Deputy President William Ruto who advised Raila to push to be in government.

According to Miguna Miguna who was recently deported for being involved in what the government termed as 'criminal activities', Odinga’s right-hand man in 2007 (Ruto) is the one who ensured that the deal happened.

Despite his loyalty and ‘sacrifice’ then, Ruto was to later learn the hard way that Raila cares for no one but himself.

Several months into the coalition government’s tenure, Ruto fell out with Raila over the infamous maize scandal in which Raila’s family was accused of being the mastermind.

A disgraced Ruto was kicked to the kerb by being stripped of his ministerial post in agriculture. Instead of fighting for him, Raila turned a blind eye despite the scandal having been closely connected with his family.

In March 2010, Wikileaks claimed that the former Prime Minister suspended Ruto to divert attention from his family’s involvement in the Sh2 billion maize scam.

In secret cables sent by then US Ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger, Raila wanted to create confusion when he said he was suspending Ruto and his Education counterpart Sam Ongeri for public debate to focus on the two and not his family’s role in the scandal.

In the leaks, Ranneberger said Raila was perceived as being "unable or unwilling to govern effectively and move forward the reform agenda".

Nominated MP George Nyamweya led five other MPs allied to the PNU wing of the coalition government saying Raila “had to lead by example and step aside” to allow for investigations into the role played by his office in the maize scandal.

He did not.

Despite saying that he would not resign over the maize scandal on February 10, 2010, Raila suspended him and Ongeri four days later. This is how the relationship between Raila and Ruto went south.

Is this betrayal why Kalonzo Musyoka has seemingly turned his back on Raila? On Tuesday, after a Wiper Party women leader’s league conference meeting in Athi River, Musyoka dismissed reports that he will be sworn in as the Deputy People's President at the end of this month.

He said that swearing in himself would be against the law.

Kalonzo, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula went missing on January 30 during Raila’s oath-taking ceremony which was attended by thousands at Uhuru Park.

Was it an epiphany that Raila would not keep his promise to back Kalonzo in 2022 or are dark forces behind the former VP’s change of heart?

A day in Kenya politics is a long time and so as we trot towards 2022, let’s wait and see if the real chameleon-air will stand up.
