Cheparkach, a suspected organised criminal gang leader is accused of overseeing a spate of killings in Mount Elgon.

There were reports that Cheparkach had been arrested in Eldoret Town on Monday night.

Journalists on Tuesday camped at the Eldoret Central Police station for hours hoping to get an official confirmation from the Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Samuel Mutunga but was all in vain.

However, according to Kiplombe Assistant Chief Sammy Kosgey, Cheparkach was arrested after he was searched and found with a National Identity card bearing his official name, Timothy Kiptanui Kiptai in the town.

“We identified the man by face with the bearing on the ID. We also found a mobile phone disengaged with the battery together with a Ugandan Youth Service Card in his pocket,” Kosgey was quoted by a local radio station.

Unconfirmed sources indicate that the suspect has already been transferred to the police headquarters in Nairobi with the Eldoret West OCPD only promising to issue a statement later once he has details of the matter.

The National Police Service (NPS) had already placed an Sh1 million bounty on the head of ‘Cheparkach’ whom they say, is armed and dangerous.
