A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) will spearhead a sanitation campaign programme in Rongai Sub County through the construction of pit latrines in selected homesteads starting next month.
World Health Organization (WHO) sponsored Community Water and Sanitation Programme (COWASA) Kenyan chapter representative Dr Wilson Ombati said the project aims at promoting community hygiene to prevent bacterial related diseases outbreak in marginalised communities.
“Our mission is to help the government manage and uplift health of its people. We are aware that many local families are exposed to health dangers due to lack of proper disposal of human waste and this programme will aim at ensuring that people have latrines in their homesteads,” said Ombati.
Ombati said this when he met leaders and health officials at the sub county headquarters at Kampi ya Moto on Thursday during a pilot survey.
He announced that the organization will spend Sh 1.7 million on the project that will see over 200 pit latrines being constructed to poor families who doesn’t have such facilities.
The health expert noted that the organisation was committed towards collaborating with the government to uplift and safeguard health standards in marginalised communities.
Ombati encouraged local leaders and health expert to sensitise on the importance of hygiene among the communities.
