Kisii Water Company, which is operated by a group of youths from the region, has been reaping immensely following the drought period.

According to director Vincent Osiemo, customers have drastically reduced from average 50 per hour to around 4 people over the same period.

“Business has been quite terrible in the last one week. The number of our esteemed customers has drastically reduced for obvious reasons (return of rains). In short, we are going at losses,” Osiemo said.

He said the company might decide to take action by temporarily suspending some of our casual workers.

“The returns are below par and this may be very difficult for us due to harsh economic climate,” he said, adding that some workers may be laid off.

The company was popular during the dry spell with area residents lining up in its premises as early as 4am.

Some of the area residents sympathised with the company but hoped it will not close down since its businesses might be required someday.

“They did an exemplary job during the dry spell and I don’t see the reason of panicking. Water is very essential and I think there are some people who will need it,” said Alice Okero.
