The Water Ministry has partnered with the Nairobi county government in a move to mitigate water scarcity in the county.
The partnership will see 40 boreholes drilled at a cost of Sh200 million.
Speaking during a press conference, the water CS Eugene Wamalwa noted that the drilling of the boreholes will take three months.
“Nairobi is a water-stressed county, after water levels in Ndakaini Dam dropped,” Wamalwa stated. He added “We will be drilling 40 boreholes at a cost of Sh200 million to mitigate the acute water shortage as we wait for the long rains.”
According to Wamalwa, the water ministry will give Sh100 million, whereas the county will provide the remaining amount.
The CS noted that once the exercise is completed, 20 million litres of water will be added to the city from the drilled boreholes.
He added that his ministry has invested on the Northern Water Collector Tunnel, which is 20 per cent complete, and is set to provide an additional 140,000 cubic metres of water to the city.
Also in attendance at the press conference was Nairobi’s Governor Evans Kidero who urged Nairobi residents to cautiously use water, noting that this will ensure at least everyone gets the commodity.
They spoke on Thursday at Maji house, Nairobi.
