Mombasa, Killifi, and Kwale counties are facing acute water shortage problems.
In Mombasa, there is a supply deficit of about 152 million litres of water a day that is supplied to the more than a million consumers in the area.
The governor of Mombasa, Ali Hassan Joho has attributed the water shortage problem to the county’s lack of fresh water sources making it dependent on piped water from the neighbouring counties like Kilifi, Kwale and Taita-Taveta. The piped water is then supplied in bulk by Coast Water Services Board to Mombasa Water Supply and Sanitation Company, which then distributes the commodity to residents.
To address this problem, Joho said that the only way to address the water problem in the area was to wait on the construction of the Sh20 billion Mwache Dam in Kwale.
In December last year, Joho and Water CS, Eugene Wamalwa signed an agreement and the World Bank is set to fund the Mwache Dam multi-purpose project.
The project is expected to supply 186 million litres of water in a day to Mombasa and Kwale.
