A section of residents of Garissa County has called upon the county and national governments to step up the fight against an acute water shortage that has hit the area.
The residents want an urgent action taken to safeguard their families from the problem. On Sunday, several residents lamented that they have been compelled to walk for miles in order to fetch water for their daily use.
They claimed that their children have been run over by moving motorists while looking for places where they can fetch the rare commodity.
“Most children risk being overrun by motorists as they look for water. We have a big problem in getting water and we see no forthcoming solution. We appeal for the county government to act fast and restore normalcy,” said Mrs. Habiba Ali Noor in Garissa Town’s Bula Iftin, as quoted by Nation.
On his part, Gawasco acting managing director Ahmed Aden said Garissa Town is experiencing fast growth rate, which has made it tough for the company to provide enough water to cater for the needs of the local residents.
He also said that ongoing heavy rainfall pounding the region has made it tougher for the firm to clean and channel the water to most residents.
