Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama has allegedly called the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (Nawassco) to address the situation to ensure residents get the commodity.

Arama said that the situation is so severe that the residents have resorted to drawing water from the ‘filthy’ Ndarugu River that passes through the two informal estates.

“I appeal to Nawassco to move quickly and address the water situation as residents who cannot afford to buy water from vendors have started using water from the river,” said Arama.

Speaking on Thursday during a tour to the areas worst hit by the shortage, Arama said that the residents risk contracting waterborne diseases. He urged the Nakuru County government to address the perennial water shortage in the area.

Monica Wangari from Rhoda Estate said that water vendors are making a killing.

“These vendors are charging us Sh 20 for a 20 litre jerry can. Those who cannot afford go to Ndarugu River to draw water for consumption,” said Wangari.

Another resident, Moses Mwaniki, a youth from Kaptembwa Estate said, “The residents are drawing dirty water from Ndarugu oblivious of the danger awaiting them,” said Moses.

James Ngugi from Nawassco said that the shortage was caused by a breakdown of operations at the Bahati Water Station.

He however said that the management is working to contain the situation.
