Former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti has filed a petition at the High Court challenging Governor Alfred Mutua’s re-election.
Wavinya claims the Machakos gubernatorial election was flawed and that the IEBC rigged the poll in Mutua’s favour denying her victory.
“The journey towards fair justice for all continues today (September 5) at the Machakos High Court. We have faith in our judicial system that the people of Machakos shall get the leadership they deserve in a fair and transparent process,” she said after filing the petition.
Mutua was declared winner of the race on August 10 after garnering 238,405 votes against Wavinya’s 199,257.
“Our people are seeking for good leadership. They wish to see greater improvement on infrastructure, economic performance, jobs creation, good governance on education, health and agriculture.”
“Our people want to feel and be part of governance by growing and expanding opportunities for jobs, reducing poverty and promoting equity in the distribution of resources in all wards. Let’s rise up to the occasion and stand with the truth. We won.”
Mutua after being declared winner said the race for the county’s top seat was not between him and Wavinya but between him and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Mutua and Kalonzo have had a frosty relationship sine the 2013 general election. Their fallout forced Mutua to quit Wiper Party and formed Maendeleo Chap Chap which he used to defend his seat.
After being declared winner Mutua said: “This victory is very special because it was a competition between me and Kalonzo who put together his entire political arsenal. It was not about Wavinya’s candidature but the removal of Mutua from office.”
