We also need free laptops for Community schools stakeholders say.The Alternative Providers for Basic Education and Training-APBET Mombasa County chapter has said that the government’s free laptop program should also be extended to community schools Countrywide. The Association said that the program was noble for all pupils and not for the government to discriminate against children from poor families. The Secretary-General APBET- Juma Mohammed Lubambo said that no provision in the constitution that draws a line between public and private school or community school pupil and the government should accord the same education to all children Countrywide. He said that children under APBET schools were from poor families, orphans and some did not even have school uniforms and books and in most cases, it was only the school management that provides them with basic necessities to enable them to attend schools.“We should not be confused to be private schools, most private schools are rich and well established with their children driven to the schools every morning and in the evening, while some of our children are hosted in the school since they have nowhere to go or no one to call their parents,” he said.He said by providing them with free laptops, the children will also learn at the same pace with other children in better establishments.“Most of our schools are in slum areas, in mosques or churches compounds since we help the poor children also get an education, so if you will discriminate against us in the laptop project the government will have double the pain these poor children are already going through” he added.Lubambo however, lauded the Jubilee government for launching the free laptop project in primary schools this year saying that the project was slowly changing the education system in the country. He said that the education system was truly embracing new technology and it would be soon at per with the international education system worldwide.
